This position is continuing (contingent funded). The funding that supports this project has an expected end date of 30 June 2028.

The Position

The Life Science Electron Microscopy Specialist supports innovative research at the Centre for Advanced Microscopy (CAM) through expert sample preparation and imaging for transmission and scanning electron microscopy in life science applications. Working closely with researchers across disciplines, the role provides training, technical support, and collaborative input on experimental design and data analysis. The Specialist contributes to the development and optimisation of EM workflows, ensures the proper operation of complex instruments, and assists in maintaining the Life Science facility. Reporting to the Senior EM Specialist and CAM Director, the role also supports teaching and outreach activities and engages with national and international microscopy networks and partners.

The Person

The ideal candidate will hold, or be progressing towards, postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field, complemented by extensive experience—or an equivalent combination of education and practical training—in electron microscopy within a life science context. You will bring demonstrated expertise in preparing biological samples and operating complex EM equipment, with advanced skills in transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Your experience includes training and mentoring clients, and applying specialised knowledge to tailor methodologies that support diverse research goals.

You will be a proactive and collaborative team member with strong planning and organisational skills, able to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes within a multidisciplinary environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is your ability to effectively engage with a wide range of stakeholders, from students to senior researchers. You will also be confident in drafting technical documentation, business correspondence, and contributing to research publications and training materials.
