The Area
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics (Dark Matter Centre) brings together six Australian and eight leading international universities as well as four Australian and global research organizations to deliver breakthroughs in our understanding of the Universe through the pursuit of the discovery of dark matter particles, with dark matter comprising 80% of the mass of the universe. The Centre has received $35 million funding from the Australian Research Council to operate from 2020-2027.

The Dark Matter Centre (CDM) assembles for the first time a strong and diverse team of physicists from particle, nuclear, and quantum physics as well as particle astrophysics. It will deliver high-profile experiments using cutting-edge technologies. The Centre will exploit the unique geographical location of the first underground physics laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere. The ultra-sensitive detectors and ultra-low radiation techniques will translate into a broad range of industrial applications.

As a Centre, we strongly believe that diversity improves ideas and innovation and leads to better outcomes and productivity. Diversity and fostering a culture of inclusiveness will be a key contributor to the scientific excellence of CDM. Along with other initiatives, we will provide carer grants to support our centre members with caring / family responsibilities to participate in professional activities.

CDM aims to develop a multidisciplinary, dynamic, interactive and collaborative culture fostering future research leaders who thrive in academic excellence and are equipped with strong transferable skills. The centre will also offer a mentoring program for early career researchers while providing opportunities to hone other skills such as outreach, industry engagement, and building international networks.

The position is located at the Australian National University, within the Research School of Physics.

The Research School of Physics (RSPhys) represents Australia's largest university based research and teaching activity in the physics discipline. The School is home to a number of major national facilities such as Australia's largest heavy-ion accelerator. Hundreds of academics, technical staff and students form the School's greatest asset, its people. This critical mass of researchers is of fundamental importance in fostering the kind of interdisciplinary interactions that create modern research excellence.

The underlying impetus of our research is a belief in the fundamental importance of physics to all of science and technology and the key role physics must play in addressing the challenges facing the modern world. For example, in addressing climate change, we must better understand the physics of the atmosphere and develop new clean sources of energy. In medicine, further development of new procedures, such as positron, hadron and Auger therapy for cancer treatment, will not be possible without advancing the basic physics that underlies them.

There is no better place to study and research physics than the Research School of Physics at The Australian National University.

The Person
To excel in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in physics, engineering or a related discipline

    • Radiation detection technology, particularly in research and development
    • Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and/or Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS)
    • Gas time projection chambers (TPC), directional detection, or related technology
    • Data analysis and simulation of experiment, particularly detector response

The Australian National University is a world-leading institution and provides a range of lifestyle, financial and non-financial rewards and programs to support staff in maintaining a healthy work/life balance whilst encouraging success in reaching their full career potential.
