Position overview
The Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (RSFAS) in the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (Academic Level A4) on a full time fixed-term appointment of 2 years, commencing in June 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be located in the Acton Campus in Canberra, Australia.
The position is offered in connection with the ARC Discovery Project grant "Modern statistical methods for clustering community ecology data". The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate with the project central investigators Associate Professor Francis Hui (ANU), Dr Patricia Menendez (University of Melbourne) and Professor David Warton (UNSW Sydney) on research projects under the primary aims detailed in the Discovery Project. As appropriate, these projects will also involve collaborations with partner investigators Dr Scott Foster and Dr Skipton Wooley (CSIRO Data61, Tasmania), multidisciplinary research with domain experts at CSIRO and the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and potentially with other members of the research school such as Professor Alan Welsh and Associate Professor Janice Scealy. These themes and topics will centre around the methodological development and computational/software implementation of new statistical approached for model-based clustering of sites and/or species in community ecology data, that are capable of handling high-dimensionality in the numbers of sites and species, accounting for species interactions, and accommodating strong spatial dependencies and potentially temporally-varying clusters. Additionally, the Postdoctoral Fellow will play a leading role in interdisciplinary applications of the proposed clustering methods to perform bioregionalisation and characterising species responses on coral community data from the Great Barrier Reef.
We are seeking applications from candidates with either a track record or proven potential in research in Statistics and/or Statistical Ecology. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have a PhD (awarded or submitted) in Statistics (or in a closely related discipline of relevance to the Discovery Project) prior to starting employment. For a successful candidate who has not already been awarded a PhD, it is required that the thesis has already been submitted before taking up employment. Relocation assistance may also be provided to the successful candidate recruited from within Australia or overseas.
