The Position

This is a key role in a friendly and dynamic research group focussed on molecular evolution, macroevolution, macroecology and conservation biology, and with an active program in interdisciplinary research. Our group tackles a wide range of research questions and approaches in evolutionary analysis. This position has a particular focus on phylogenetic analyses of patterns and rates of molecular evolution connecting change at the genomic level to patterns of biodiversity in time and space, but the successful candidate will also be encouraged to engage in a range of collaborative projects undertaken by the MacroEvoEco research group.

This position is associated with an ARC Discovery Grant awarded to Prof Lindell Bromham, titled “Dynamic evolution of mutation rates: causes and impacts on genomic analysis”. This project will take a whole-of-biodiversity approach to understanding the forces shaping mutation rate, impact on evolution of biodiversity and effect on accuracy and precision of phylogenetic analyses. Using a range of case studies with available data, the expected outcome of this project will be a greater understanding variation in mutation rate between species, providing significant benefits in developing more sophisticated and reliable phylogenetic analyses.

The Person

We are looking for a research scientist with a background in evolutionary biology and experience in phylogenetic analysis. Experience with comparative analysis of DNA sequences, particularly estimation and comparison of rates and patterns of molecular evolution, is ideal but not essential.

We are looking for someone who is curious about evolutionary mechanisms and keen to find new ways to explore the link between evolution at the genomic level and patterns and causes of biodiversity generation. Our ideal candidate likes challenging problems and working both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team to develop innovative approaches to evolutionary analysis.
