The appointee will be expected to carry out world-leading research resulting in regular publications in leading venues, contribute to the School’s stellar teaching program, supervise HDR students, apply for external grants, and be available for service roles as appropriate. The position is open with regard to area of specialisation, though the successful candidates will be expected to have demonstrated competence to contribute to the School’s important teaching in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE).

The School

The School of Philosophy, Research School of Social Sciences, is a world-leading department that combines several of the world's most cited living philosophers with dynamic and award-winning mid-career and early career researchers. ANU philosophers enjoy what is widely recognized as one of the world’s best environments for research and teaching in Philosophy. Our principal strengths are in moral and political philosophy, philosophy of science (especially philosophy of biology, probability, and decision theory), and philosophy of mind and psychology. We have a proud reputation of repeatedly winning significant support for both individual- and team-projects from the Australian Research Council, and every year welcome many international visitors to Canberra, hosting multiple workshops each year, as well as a vibrant series of weekly research seminars and reading groups. We have a constant flow of postdoctoral researchers, who go on to continuing positions at leading departments worldwide. We have three major research Centres— the Centre for Moral, Social and Political Theory, the Centre for Philosophy of the Sciences, and the Centre for Consciousness.

The College

The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is the largest of the six Colleges at ANU. It is structured into two main research schools, offers degrees in more than 20 discipline areas and excels in research across the humanities and social sciences. The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice. Our academic staff are internationally recognised for their research, and many are members of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of the Social Sciences of Australia, or both. A hub of vibrant activity, we host numerous lectures, concerts and exhibitions each year, most of which are open to the public. Our students, staff and graduates come from more than 60 nations, bringing a diversity of perspective to campus life.

Canberra is one of the world's finest places to live, with a rare combination of urban comfort and access to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world (including an easy drive to some of the world's best, and quietest, beaches).
