Position overview
The Crawford School of Public Policy is among the world's premier public policy institutions. The School’s core areas of expertise are economics, governance, environment, and development. Its interdisciplinary strengths are complemented by an Asia-Pacific focus. Within the School, the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics (ACDE) is devoted to scholarly pursuits in economics and development, with an emphasis on Southeast, Northeast, and South Asia, as well as the Southwest Pacific. A standout division within ACDE is the ANU Indonesia Project (the Project), an internationally acclaimed center for research and graduate training on the Indonesian economy. This Project scrutinizes and analyzes Indonesia's economic progress, communicating its findings to both the Australian and Indonesian governments, as well as the wider business community. It also encourages additional research on the Indonesian economy.
Annually, the Project organizes more than thirteen activities, mainly in Australia and Indonesia. These include the Indonesia Update Conference, Research Grant Program, Visitor Program, Indonesia Study Group, High Level Policy Dialogue, Hadi Soesastro Policy Forum, and Sadli Lecture. One of the Project's specialized research areas is the trade and industrial economics of Indonesia. This focus includes researching topics and generating policy discussions on the political economy of trade policy; trade liberalization and its socio-economic effects; trade, poverty and inequality; private sector development; as well as firms' export behaviors and productivity.
The Project's success in conducting these activities can be attributed to the strong collaboration among its members and the effective inter-generational leadership transitions within the academic team. This cohesive approach has enabled the Project to manage its objectives efficiently and maintain its leading role in the field.
