The Research Officer will help identify and propose conservation measures to conserve inland water ecosystems in the Murray-Darling Basin. This position offers:

The work will be undertaken in consultation with project funders, the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists and the Australian Climate and Biodiversity Foundation.

About the opportunity

This position is a fixed term appointment for a period of one year. The Research Officer– Nature positive Murray–Darling Basin assessment provides scientific support to implement the “Nature positive technical assessment of ‘30by30’ requirements for freshwater ecosystems of the Murray-Darling” Basin project. The project aims to define options for Australian governments to implement Global Biodiversity Framework targets for inland water biodiversity conservation. This will generate options for new measures in the upcoming review of the Basin Plan and Commonwealth Water Act.

The Research Officer works as part of Prof. Jamie Pittock’s project research team with Dr Matt Colloff and a PhD scholar. The activities include:

  • Working with experts and governments in south east Australia;
  • Assembling data on waterbirds, threatened species, and means of considering cultural values of wetlands;
  • Contributing to GIS based and marxan modelling of conservation options;
  • Meeting with governmental decision makers to assist them to decide on conservation options;
  • Communicating research findings and academic literature and publicly.

Applications are particularly invited from researchers who undertake high impact collaborative and cross-disciplinary research, and whose interests and expertise can contribute to the Australian National University

Longer term and/or ongoing appointment may be offered in exceptional cases subject to performance and budget availability as well the candidate’s demonstrated capability and desire to complement the College’s strategic agendas in teaching, research and broader engagement within the University and community.
