The Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (Bell School) is a world-leading centre for research, education, and policy analysis on international and Asia Pacific politics, security, diplomacy, and strategic affairs. The School comprises a number of vibrant, interdisciplinary, intellectual communities: the Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, the Department of Political and Social Change, and the Department of Pacific Affairs.

Located in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, the Department of Pacific Affairs (DPA) provides a dynamic and collaborative environment for research and teaching on the politics, governance, development, and societies of the Pacific region. With recognised expertise in governance, development policy, security, and social inclusion, DPA offers staff the chance to work with engaged students, undertake high-impact research, and help shape understanding of the Pacific’s social, cultural and political landscape.

The Opportunity
The position has been established to support DPA’s teaching contribution to the Bell School’s Bachelor of Asia Pacific Affairs (BAPA). Located in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, BAPA is an innovative undergraduate dual-degree program between ANU and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. Students study at both ANU and Ritsumeikan’s Osaka Ibaraki Campus (OIC) and are taught by academic staff from both institutions in English. On successful completion, students receive separate degrees from both institutions. The program was launched in 2019, and has a cohort of students primarily from Australia, Japan, and the wider Asia Pacific region. The lecturer position will teach ANU courses as part of the delivery of the BAPA program at OIC. The role is based at ANU, Australia, but it is part of the job requirement that the successful incumbent of this position will be available to teach for up to 4 months at Ritsumeikan University in Japan each year.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an early to mid-career scholar with a strong record of teaching and research in Pacific studies, political science, development studies, or a related field. They will have expertise in areas aligned with the Department’s specialisations, such as governance, development, security, or social inclusion in the Pacific region. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about engaging diverse undergraduate and graduate student cohorts, able to work collaboratively across disciplines, and committed to contributing to the Department’s teaching, research, and intellectual community. A demonstrated ability to supervise research students and to develop a strong research agenda that advances understanding of Pacific state, society, and governance is highly desirable.
