Classification: Academic Level A or Academic Level B

Salary package: $89,313 - $137,870 per annum (plus 17% superannuation)

Terms: Full Time, Continuing (contingent funded)

This position is continuing (contingent funded). The funding that supports this project has an expected end date of 31/12/2028.

The Position

This position is funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project, ‘Improving projections of the risk of ocean-driven Antarctic ice melt’, which aims to use high resolution ocean - sea ice models to understand the oceanic processes which control the delivery of heat to Antarctica’s ice shelves. The Discovery Project is funded for 2026-2029 and represents a collaboration between investigators at the Australian National University (Dr Adele Morrison), University of New South Wales (Prof. Matthew England) and University of Tasmania (Dr Madelaine Rosevear).

The Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow in Antarctic Ocean Modelling will use numerical models to develop new understanding of the complex ocean processes that drive Antarctic ice melt. This will lead to improved projections of future rates of sea level rise stemming from Antarctica. Areas of particular interest include understanding mechanisms of heat transport towards ice shelf cavities; investigating the sensitivity of melt to changes in winds, the offshore heat reservoir, along-shelf ocean currents and sea ice; and improving simulations of Antarctic ice shelf – ocean interactions, including basal melt parameterisation.

The Person

We are looking for an early career researcher with a PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment) in the field of physical oceanography or a related area. The Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow will undertake independent research, assist with supervision of research students and actively contribute to the Climate and Fluid Physics group.

The School

The Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow will be a member of the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES). RSES is Australia’s leading academic research institution for Earth and Marine Sciences. We have a reputation for international leadership and innovation, focused on developing new methods, whether experimental, analytical or computational. Our research spans the range from solid earth evolution to climate processes, and from 21st century resources to climate change impact.

The College

The ANU College of Science and Medicine encompasses the disciplines of: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, and Science Communication and is also home to a number of cross-disciplinary and specialist Institutes and Centres.  Staff and students within the ANU College of Science and Medicine conduct research and deliver a research-led education program that encompasses the breadth of the sciences, supported by extensive international networks and by world-class facilities.
