About the Role
The Linux Systems Administrator will assume responsibility for cyber resilience for Red Hat and other Linux systems. A vital component of these roles will be establishing proper lifecycle management to ensure all Red Hat systems as well all applications hosted on these systems are being patched and kept up to date. Another vital component will be to ensure systems and applications are standardised, secured, and hardened and align with industry standards, such as, ISM and CIS.

The main responsibilities will involve working with the Cyber Resilience Squad, who are responsible for ensuring all systems are regularly patched and maintained up to date. 

Key Duties
Under broad direction you will:

  • Participate in the design, development, installation and configuration of predominately Linux-based systems, software and infrastructure
  • Monitor and maintain Linux infrastructure including hardware, software and associated services.
  • Offer technical support for deployed solutions and perform regular maintenance and updates to ensure ongoing system reliability and performance. 

The Linux Systems Administrators will be required to work in value stream squads with minimal supervision to formulate, establish and implement patching policies and ensure cyber resilience to manage and maintain the suite of operational computer systems and services hosted on Red Hat Enterprise/Linux platforms to provide optimal availability of services, hardware and software to the University community. These roles will require liaison with developers, system administrators, infrastructure specialists, business areas, and end-users from within ITS, and across the University. Liaison with external vendors and their support areas will also be required.

  • Responsible for architecting, establishing, implementing, and maintaining patching policies for Red Hat Enterprise Linux-based systems, software and infrastructure, ensuring system life cycle is maintained and kept up-to-date.
  • Reviewing cyber security posture, ensuring appropriate maturity level, and implementing security controls and best practices.
  • Plan and deploy operating system and application upgrades and patches, and undertake other Linux system administration tasks.
  • Monitor and maintain the IT infrastructure and operations supported by the Linux Team, including hardware, software, and associated services, while providing guidance and assisting other team members in diagnosing and resolving issues, offering second and third-level support as needed, and documenting processes and procedures.
  • Interact with a variety of stakeholders and manage expectations to achieve optimal results.
  • Participate in on-call and work outside of regular hours as needed for this position. 

About You
We are seeking an experienced Linux professional to work as part of a small team. You must have high-level technical knowledge with the ability to contribute to the improvement and development of best practice Linux system administration. We welcome applications from individuals who possess the following attributes:

  • Experience in the design, installation, maintenance and change management of Linux and related systems, and technical delivery of projects.
  • Ability to work productivity and autonomously in a small team.
  • Ability to liaise with various stakeholders, including non-technical staff.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills including in writing technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience in life-cycle management of Red Hat Enterprise Linux using Red Hat Satellite 6, Anisible, Puppet, Gitlab in a highly complex decentralised environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in life cycle management of various applications such as, Red Hat Satellite, Ansible, Puppet, GitLab, Squid, mailman, Shibboleth, Apache, Wordpress and Drupal.
  • Demonstrated experience in securing and hardening Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems against ISM controls and CIS benchmarks.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems administration with configuration management through Red Hat Satellite, Puppet, and GitLab.
  • Proven track record in proactively resolving BAU tickets and responds to all incidents in a timely manner.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to build long standing relationships with clients.
  • Experience in working across BAU and project initiatives and handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and guidance.
