The Position

The IP Manager provides specialist leadership across the University’s intellectual property portfolio, supporting the identification, protection and commercialisation of research-derived assets. The role leads the end-to-end IP lifecycle, from intake and assessment through to protection strategy, transaction support and ongoing portfolio management.

Working closely with academic and professional staff across the University, the position plays a key role in shaping IP strategy and advising on patenting, investment and commercial pathways. The IP Manager contributes to the development and implementation of frameworks that ensure the effective governance, utilisation and impact of ANU’s intellectual property assets.

The role is responsible for managing complex IP matters, including coordinating patent filings, engaging with external legal and patent advisers, and supporting the negotiation of licences and other commercial agreements. The position also provides strategic advice, prepares high-quality briefing materials, and ensures accurate portfolio tracking, compliance and reporting.

The Person

You are an experienced professional with deep expertise in intellectual property, research commercialisation or a related field. You bring demonstrated experience in advising on IP protection strategies, managing portfolios, and supporting commercial transactions within a complex organisational environment.

You are highly analytical and solutions-focused, with the ability to assess opportunities, balance risk and make sound recommendations. Your strong communication and influencing skills enable you to engage effectively with researchers, senior stakeholders and external partners, and to translate complex technical and legal concepts into clear, actionable advice.

You will be confident working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, able to prioritise competing demands while maintaining a high level of attention to detail. Experience within the higher education or research sector will be highly regarded.

The School/Department

The Commercialisation and IP team sits within the Office of Research, Translation and Partnerships and is responsible for enabling the translation of research into real-world impact. The team provides specialist expertise across intellectual property, commercialisation strategy, licensing and new venture development, working closely with researchers, industry and investors.

The College/Division

The Research and Innovation Portfolio provides leadership and support for the University’s research strategy, partnerships and impact agenda. It brings together expertise across research development, commercialisation, and industry engagement to maximise the value and outcomes of ANU research.
