About the opportunity

As a Casual Sessional Academic (Tutor), you will contribute to the delivery of SOCO courses with support, guidance and direction from the Course Convenor and School staff.

You will work both independently and collaboratively to foster active, evidence-based learning, motivate students to achieve their best and support them in meeting course learning outcomes.

Applicants should possess qualifications and/or relevant professional experience appropriate to the discipline area. A demonstrated ability to engage and educate students, along with a collaborative approach to teamwork, is highly valued.

Tutoring qualifications are highly regarded. If you have not recently completed tutor training offered by the College, you will be required to undertake this professional development. Successful applicants will be advised of the dates, likely around O-Week.

Casual Sessional Academic roles at ANU are non-ladder positions and are not eligible for participation in the academic promotions process.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants for Casual Sessional Academic (CSA) tutoring or demonstrating roles must meet the applicable academic qualification or professional experience equivalence requirements for the course(s) they are seeking to teach.

Eligibility will be assessed against the specific course and course level, not simply on whether an applicant is generally qualified to tutor.

Applicants may meet the academic eligibility requirement through one or more of the following pathways:

• Relevant completed qualification: A completed qualification in a relevant discipline at least one AQF level higher than the course being taught.
• Relevant qualification at the same level: A completed qualification, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline at the same AQF level as the course, together with appropriate professional development and supervision.
• Exceptional academic achievement: For eligible 1XXX–3XXX and 6XXX–7XXX level courses, demonstrated achievement of the relevant learning outcomes to an exceptional level, normally evidenced by a High Distinction (HD) in the relevant course or equivalent study, as determined by the School.
• Current doctoral candidature: Current PhD/doctoral candidates may be eligible where the proposed teaching is within or sufficiently related to their area of doctoral study.
• Relevant professional registration and practice: Current registration in an applicable profession together with current practice relevant to the proposed teaching. Where professional registration and practice form the basis for professional equivalency, a separate, more detailed assessment process will be required. Applicants will be contacted separately if additional information is needed.

• your completed qualifications, including discipline/field, institution and year awarded;
• your current study, including whether you are an undergraduate, postgraduate coursework or doctoral student;
• if you are a doctoral candidate, your area of research/thesis topic;
• any relevant courses in which you achieved an HD, particularly courses you are applying to tutor or closely related courses;
• your previous tutoring/demonstrating experience, including the course(s) and when you most recently taught them;
• any relevant professional registration, professional practice or industry experience; and
• any other academic or professional experience that demonstrates knowledge of the subject matter relevant to your preferred courses.

Where information cannot be verified through ANU records, you may be asked to provide supporting evidence.

Additional course-specific eligibility requirements

Some teaching allocations are subject to additional restrictions:

• Undergraduate coursework students may only independently tutor/demonstrate undergraduate 1XXX–3XXX level course instances. Where undergraduate and postgraduate students are taught together, an undergraduate tutor may only participate under an approved team-teaching arrangement, as determined by the Course Convenor.
• Postgraduate coursework students who have achieved an HD in the relevant postgraduate course may be eligible to tutor the postgraduate and/or corresponding undergraduate instance.
• Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students are not ordinarily permitted to tutor 4XXX or 8XXX-level courses, except where exceptional approval is granted by the Associate Director (Education).
• A CSA will not ordinarily be selected to teach more than two courses in a semester or teaching session.
  
  

Returning tutors

If you have previously been approved and have taught the same course, an existing professional experience equivalence assessment may be reused where:

• the most recent approved assessment was completed within the previous two years;
• you have actively tutored or demonstrated in the same course within the previous 12 months; and
• there has been no material change affecting the basis of the previous assessment.

Meeting the academic qualification or professional experience equivalence requirements establishes eligibility for consideration only. It does not guarantee selection or appointment.

Previous teaching performance, professional conduct, reliability and suitability for the proposed teaching role may also be taken into account.

Selection process

Appointment to these roles will occur through a three-step process:

Step 1: Application Assessment

All submitted applications will be reviewed against the selection criteria, including submitted documentation such as the statement of suitability, CV and completed Course Preference/Eligibility Form.

Step 2: Equivalency Assessment (AQF Requirements)

Applicants who meet the requirements of Step 1 will be automatically assessed against the relevant Professional Experience Equivalency requirements based on the information provided in their completed Course Preference/Eligibility Form. https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2u7rynUycb?origin=lprLink

If an assessment cannot be made from this information, you may be asked to complete the Professional Experience Equivalency Form and/or provide additional information to enable assessment against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) requirements relevant to the course(s) you wish to tutor.

Step 3: Final Appointment Requirements

Successful candidates must complete all required HR onboarding documentation and any mandatory tutor training prior to commencing teaching duties.

Important information

• Review of applications will begin after the closing date and continue until all positions are filled.
• Preparation for Semester 1, 2027 teaching begins in O-Week from 15 February 2027, with some courses potentially requiring earlier preparation.
• Completion of compulsory training may be required in the weeks leading up to Semester 1, 2027 if you have not completed the required training previously or your training is not up to date.
• Applications received late or missing required documentation may not be considered.
• Availability of tutor hours for any course is subject to change depending on enrolment numbers. An offer of a CSA contract does not guarantee hours will be available.
• The School of Computing intends to collect tutor performance feedback from Course Convenors in 2026. This feedback may be shared with future Convenors for subsequent teaching opportunities. Further details will be provided to successful applicants.
