Position overview
The Technical Officer (Heavy Ion Radiation Effects) provides specialist technical support for the HIAF-SIBL capability within the Research School of Physics. Reporting to the CEO of Heavy Ion Accelerators (HIA), the role involves working closely with academic and professional staff, students, and external stakeholders. The officer will support the delivery and development of heavy ion irradiation services by engaging with users, offering technical advice, and assisting in experimental design. Responsibilities include advising on the suitability of HIAF capabilities, supporting simulations and diagnostics, and contributing to the preparation of contracts. The role is critical to the continuous improvement and operation of HIAF-SIBL and ensuring that user requirements are met safely, efficiently, and within agreed parameters.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will hold (or be near completion of) an Honours or postgraduate degree in physics or a related field, with experience using heavy ion accelerators for research or industry applications. They will demonstrate strong technical expertise in ion beam analysis techniques and the operation and maintenance of complex equipment within a research or higher education environment. A sound understanding of WHS and radiation safety regulations is essential. The candidate will have a passion for developing innovative instrumentation and analytical methods to enhance accelerator performance and safety. Experience with programming languages such as C++ or Python, and the ability to train and support users in a laboratory setting, particularly in handling biological, semiconductor, or shielding materials, will be highly regarded.
