The Position

Technical Manager will play a key role in supporting the OreAI project, working under the broad direction of the OreAI team and in close collaboration with the Experimental Mechanics group. The role focuses on imaging and characterisation of breakage, liberation, and beneficiation studies on mining materials using advanced X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) techniques. The incumbent will undertake independent research in materials mechanics and related applications, contributing to high-impact publications and conference presentations. The position involves developing novel experimental methods and 3D data analysis tools, managing research projects, and fostering collaborations with academic, industry, and government partners. The Technical Manager will also contribute to securing external research funding, supervising students and research support staff, and supporting the translation of research outcomes into practical and commercial applications. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research within a multidisciplinary and innovative environment.

The Person

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD (or be within six months of completion) in Archaeology, Physics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a demonstrated record of independent research evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. They will have extensive experience in laboratory X-ray computed tomography (XCT) applied to experimental mechanics, particularly in areas such as rock characterisation, ore or granular material fragmentation, image segmentation, 3D visualisation, and feature extraction. The candidate will demonstrate expertise in designing and conducting experiments that integrate advanced mechanical testing with tomography-based volumetric analysis and morphological assessment.

Experience managing and training laboratory users, overseeing honours and postgraduate students, and maintaining complex research or teaching laboratories is essential. The successful applicant will possess strong planning, supervisory, and presentation skills, and the ability to work collaboratively, lead and motivate teams, set priorities, and meet deadlines to deliver high-quality research and operational outcomes.
