Position Overview

At the Australian National University (ANU), we’re transforming the digital experience for our students, researchers, and staff through the delivery of our Digital Plan — a 10-year roadmap for world-class technology capability.

We’re seeking a Systems Lead to join our Digital Delivery group — a people-focused leader who combines strong technical knowledge with a passion for developing others, building capability, and delivering reliable, secure digital services across the University.

About the Role

In this pivotal position, you will lead resources responsible for the administration and continual improvement of the University’s Windows, Unix, and application environments.

Working closely with the Systems Administration Chapter Lead, you’ll guide your skilled technicians to deliver high-quality services that support teaching, learning, research and operations across the University. You’ll balance technical leadership with people management — supporting your staff to grow, collaborate, and innovate.

While the role retains a focus on modern automation and Infrastructure-as-Code practices, your broader impact will be in ensuring secure, stable, efficient and service performance across core systems and platforms.

About You

You’re an experienced leader who brings:

  • Demonstrated success leading multiple technical teams in a complex environment.
  • Strong technical grounding in Windows, Unix and application administration.
  • Broad understanding of networking, security, and automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, shell scripting, Ansible configuration management).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive, collaborative approach.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
  • A commitment to staff development, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in higher education, research, or large enterprise environments will be highly regarded but not essential.
