The Position
ANU Marketing and Communications (AMC) is the University's central point for internal and external communication, media relations, public events, and brand and marketing activities.
The Office of Public Affairs is part of AMC and consists of three main streams of work: Media, Publications and Corporate Communications.
Our audiences include staff and students, journalists, government, and the public. We publish high quality communications on a wide range of channels including web, social media, print, radio, video and digital platforms.
We are looking for a news buff who can manage our proactive media with enthusiasm, and our reactive media with sound judgement.
Our ideal applicant will be an experienced media manager or former journalist who is calm under pressure, hard-working, and who actively contributes to our positive and supportive team culture.
Reporting to the Head of Public Affairs, the Senior Media Manager will support ANU to showcase its world-class research and education to a wide audience through commissioning story ideas, editing, pitching to journalists, managing press conferences and briefings, coordinating responses to media inquiries, and managing a team of media officers. They will also oversee in-house media training and other media engagement support for ANU staff.
The Senior Manager needs to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships across the University, including with the senior executive, academics of all levels, researchers, professional staff and students in Colleges, Schools and other Divisions. They also need to develop and maintain excellent relationships with journalists.
Our ideal applicant will know the media landscape inside out and be experienced in leading and executing proactive and reactive media engagement strategies. They will also be experienced in managing teams and thrive in a fast-paced environment. An enthusiasm for university research and an insatiable curiosity are also big pluses.
