Salary package: $95,324 – $114,700 per annum plus 17% superannuation

About us 

ACCESS – the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator – is a collaborative venture between the Government and the Australian research community to support development, maintenance and access to climate and weather models and data.  

Hosted at ANU, ACCESS-NRI is as a multi-party collaborative venture responding to the current and future needs of Australia’s scientific, Government and stakeholder community. At the core of ACCESS-NRI is a community of Research Software Engineers with a range of skills including high performance computing, climate and Earth system model development, advanced visualisation, model optimisation, code repository management, machine learning, model evaluation and data science.

The Role 

We are seeking two Research Software Engineers with a background in scientific modelling to enhance our atmosphere and ocean model development capabilities for the benefit of research facilities, stakeholders and the wider ACCESS user community. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of Earth system models, climate change and high-performance computing to help address major challenges facing society. 

The role of the Research Software Engineer (Atmosphere Specialist/ Ocean Specialist) will be to work collaboratively with the Atmosphere/ Ocean model development team to develop software tools and infrastructure to support the ACCESS community. The position will require demonstrated experience in working as part of a software development team as well as the ability to self-direct and prioritise tasks to accomplish both short- and long-term goals. An aptitude for learning new skills, flexibility to contribute to varied projects as needed, and ability to communicate effectively across disciplines are essential. The role has a mixture of internal and external stakeholder engagement, with varied technical and non-technical backgrounds.  Candidates with a scientific and programming background are encouraged to apply.

Skills and Requirements 

Required:   

  • Experience with scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, Fortran) 
  • Linux/Unix experience 
  • Software development experience with modern version control systems (e.g., git, GitHub/GitLab) 
  • Scientific background 
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively across disciplines 
  • Work effectively in a collaborative team environment  
  • Self-directed learner, good listener and accountable 
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to handle multiple issues, tasks and competing priorities concurrently 
  • Commitment to a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace environment 

Desirable: 

  • Experience with high-performance computing 
  • Experience developing and/or delivering technical training 
  • Passionate about sharing your knowledge and helping others  
  • FAIR principles for data and software
