The Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (Bell School) is a world-leading centre for research, education, and policy analysis on international and Asia Pacific politics, security, diplomacy, and strategic affairs. The School comprises a number of vibrant, interdisciplinary, intellectual communities: the Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, the Department of Political and Social Change, and the Department of Pacific Affairs.

Located in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, the Department of Political and Social Change (PSC) provides a dynamic and collaborative environment for research and teaching in Asian politics and society, with expertise in Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and China. PSC brings together interdisciplinary perspectives from political science, sociology, history, and anthropology, and offers staff the opportunity to engage with ambitious students, develop influential research, and contribute to understanding political and social change in Asia.

The Opportunity
The position has been established to support the Department of Political and Social Change’s teaching contribution to the Bell School’s Bachelor of Asia Pacific Affairs (BAPA). Located in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, BAPA is an innovative undergraduate dual-degree program between ANU and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. Students study at both ANU and Ritsumeikan’s Osaka Ibaraki Campus (OIC) and are taught by academic staff from both institutions in English. On successful completion, students receive separate degrees from both institutions. The program was launched in 2019, and has a cohort of students primarily from Australia, Japan, and the Asia Pacific region. The lecturer position will teach courses as part of the delivery of the BAPA program at OIC. The role is based at ANU, Australia, but it is part of the job requirement that the successful incumbent of this position will be available to teach for up to 4 months at Ritsumeikan University in Japan each year.

The successful applicant will also have a general ability to teach into undergraduate and graduate courses, contributing to PSC’s programs in political science and Asian politics, with opportunities to supervise honours and graduate research students. The role provides the chance to develop a strong research agenda aligned with PSC’s areas of specialisation, including democratisation, conflict and conflict resolution, and related fields. The successful candidate will engage with diverse student cohorts, collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, and contribute to PSC’s position as a leading centre for research and teaching on Asian politics and society.

Our Ideal Candidate.
The ideal candidate will be an early to mid-career scholar with a strong record of teaching and research in the politics and society of Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, or South Asia. They will have expertise in areas aligned with the Department’s specialisations, such as democratisation, conflict and conflict resolution, gender, or religious politics. Given the Department’s already existing profile of expertise, we particularly encourage applications from scholars who specialise in the politics and society of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, or India, or who have a comparative focus on multiple Southeast Asian, Northeast Asian, or South Asian countries. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about engaging diverse undergraduate and graduate student cohorts, able to work collaboratively across disciplines, and committed to contributing to the Department’s teaching, research, and intellectual community. A demonstrated ability to supervise research students and to develop a strong research agenda that advances understanding of Asian politics and society is highly desirable.
