The Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (Bell School) is a world-leading centre for research, education, and policy analysis on international and Asia Pacific politics, security, diplomacy, and strategic affairs. The School comprises a number of vibrant, interdisciplinary, intellectual communities: the Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, the Department of Political and Social Change, and the Department of Pacific Affairs.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Research Associate to contribute to innovative research in defence policy as part of a new five-year partnership between the Australian National University and the Australian Defence College. Based primarily at the Australian War College in Weston Creek and reporting to the Australian War College (AWC) Chair in Military Studies, the successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including academic staff, policymakers, and external stakeholders, to deliver high-impact research and publications.

The successful candidate will conduct research under the direction of the AWC Chair on strategic and defence policy, contributing to reports, articles, policy briefs and other publications; compiling and refining data for publications and graphics; and assisting with editing and proof-reading - with opportunities for developing and building new expertise.

The role will include outreach tasks including working with senior staff to deliver Track 1.5 / 2 activities for government stakeholders; supporting engagement with the Australian Defence Force and Australian and regional policy communities; developing and supporting a wide range of policy briefings, roundtables, workshops and other events; engaging with stakeholders to translate research into actionable insights, managing program reporting, schedules and travel; providing grant writing and administration support; assisting with budgeting; upkeeping databases; and supporting the teaching and mentoring of postgraduate students.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will hold Australian citizenship, a Bachelors degree in a related field, with demonstrated interest or expertise in strategy and defence policy. An Honours or Masters degree is highly desirable. They will have strong research skills, strong administrative skills, ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, and excellent communication and presentation skills. Experience engaging with stakeholders in academic or policy contexts is preferable.
