Classification: Academic Level A/B
Salary package: $85,010 - $131,227 per annum plus 17% superannuation
Term: Full-time, Continuing (Contingent Funded)

This position is continuing (contingent funded). The funding that supports this project has an expected end date of December 2026.

Position Overview

The position is fully funded by the National Environmental Science Program (NESP) Climate Systems Hub. The Hub is an applied science partnership involving Australia’s leading climate change research and decision-making agencies. It is funded by the Australian Government and led by CSIRO, in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology and five universities: The Australian National University, the University of New South Wales, the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and the University of Tasmania.

NESP research directly informs decisions, policies, and climate adaptation responses, advancing knowledge of Australia’s future climate to help build a climate-resilient nation.

This position is based in the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University and will contribute to the Hub’s research project on extreme rainfall in compound events. This is a key opportunity for an early-career academic to lead research into compound extreme rainfall events. The successful candidate will collaborate with project partners to:

  • Develop robust methodologies to define temporally compounding and multivariate compound extreme rainfall events associated with major stakeholder impacts.
  • Quantify the historical and projected future distribution of compounding extreme rainfall events.
  • Investigate the physical drivers of compounding extreme rainfall events.
  • Deliver well-documented code and datasets related to compounding extreme rainfall events.

The successful candidate will also work closely with the Bureau of Meteorology and Monash University, engaging with stakeholders to identify and address the extreme rainfall events most critical to their needs.

The Person

To thrive in this role, you will possess:

  • A PhD in climate or atmospheric science or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research experience, as evidenced by a record of well-cited publications in peer-reviewed journals, successful collaborations, and other indicators such as awards or invitations to present at conferences.
  • Expertise in analysing outputs from numerical models of the climate system, with advanced programming skills and experience in High-Performance Computing.
  • Proven ability to design and pursue innovative research in climate or atmospheric science. While experience working with industry or government stakeholders and delivering stakeholder-focused research outcomes or briefings is advantageous, it is not mandatory.
  • A capacity to supervise and mentor high-quality research students.
  • Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to contribute effectively to projects and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • A commitment to fostering respectful and productive working relationships with colleagues, staff, and students at all levels.
  • A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies, with a commitment to applying them in a university context.
