Salary package: $87,135 - $134,507 per annum plus 17% superannuation 
Terms: 3x Full time, Fixed term (up to 24 months)  

This position will provide opportunities to:  

  • Conduct cutting edge research in machine learning, AI and algorithms, such as but not limited to Bayesian machine learning, human-centered AI and interpretable machine learning, attention markets, gig economies and prediction markets.  
  • Opportunity to supervise research students and work as part of a larger team.   
  • Opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaborations, and collaborate with industry and government   

About the opportunity  

We invite applications for multiple Postdoctoral / Research Fellow positions to contribute to a range of exciting projects in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and algorithms. These are two-year fixed-term appointments within a vibrant and growing research community at ANU. The successful candidates will join teams working on projects that span core AI research and interdisciplinary collaborations through the ANU Integrated AI Network (ai.anu.edu.au), focusing on integrating human and social values into AI systems.

Three key research streams are available:

  1. Bayesian Machine Learning – Led by Dr Thang Bui, this project focuses on sequential decision-making and bridging deep learning theory and practice. Applicants with expertise in probabilistic modelling, approximate inference, deep learning, or Bayesian optimisation are encouraged to apply.
  2. Interpretable Machine Learning for Natural Language – Led by Prof Lexing Xie, this stream applies machine learning to climate, health, and environmental challenges. Strong candidates will have experience in ML algorithms, human-centered ML, or NLP. Supported by an ARC Future Fellowship and CSIRO-NSF project.
  3. Computational Analysis of Online Economies – Led by Prof Lexing Xie and Dr Yun Kuen Cheung, this research explores digital markets and social platforms using ML, game theory, and computational economics.
