We are looking for an experienced, passionate and creative Linux Systems Administrator with extensive hands-on experience, skills, and background. Help us design, implement and maintain Linux-based systems and provide technical support. We want YOU to join our team and help the University embark on the most significant digital transformation in our history. This position is open to candidates with a broad range of experience. 

We’re open to considering applicants who are looking to relocate to Canberra within the next two to three months, while working remotely in the interim. The Australian National University offers a relocation allowance for travel and removal expenses to interstate and international candidates moving to Canberra.

About the Role
The role will assume responsibility for Red Hat Linux server fleet management and administration. A vital component of this role will be to provide BAU support via our internal ticketing system in a timely manner and to ensure systems are being patched and always up-to-date and software currency is maintained. The role will also contribute to documentation, process automation, and participate in various projects and initiatives to improve upon current state.

Key Duties: The Linux Systems Administrator will be required to manage, maintain, and administer a suite of operational computer systems and services hosted on Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform to provide optimal availability of services to the University community. The role will require liaison with developers, system administrators, infrastructure specialists, business areas, and end users from within ITS, and across the University. Liaison with external vendors and their support areas will also be required.

  • Responsible for timely resolution of BAU tickets and respond promptly to all P1 – P2 incidents.
  • Responsible for patching - ensure systems are always up-to-date and software and operating system currency is maintained at N-1.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues within the environment in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for requests related to Oracle Identity Management, IdP, SSL certificate management, LAMP web hosting platform, mailman and other ongoing BAU and project activities.
  • Responsible for the design, development, deployment, and configuration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux based systems, software and infrastructure.
  • Plan and deploy operating system and application upgrades and patches; and undertake other Linux system administration tasks.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve the best outcome.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to other team members engaged in the diagnosis and resolution of issues and provide second and third level support where required.
  • Investigate new technologies and applications as appropriate, identify opportunities to provide new or enhanced services to the University community.
  • Document processes and procedures.
  • Participate in meetings, training, professional development activities and planning.
  • Provide On-Call support for out of hours maintenance for the computing environments supported by the Unix Team where required.

 

About You
We’d love to hear from you if you have hands-on experience in Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems administration with configuration management through Red Hat Satellite, Puppet, and GitLab.

  • Extensive experience and proven record of Linux systems administration and BAU activities including patching and life-cycle management, LAMP stack management, SSL management, mailman, IdP, and Oracle IDAM. 3+ years is desirable, however all applications will be considered - we're open to those who have moved into this space and have a strong ability to develop knowledge on the job through initiative and problem solving.
  • Experience in infrastructure monitoring systems and proactively resolve any issues.
  • Experience in security best practices including ISM controls and CIS benchmarks.
  • Proven track record in proactively resolving BAU tickets and responds to all incidents in a timely manner.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to build long standing relationships with clients.
  • Experience in working across BAU and project initiatives and handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and guidance.
