Position overview
The Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI), located within the ANU College of Systems and Society (CSS), is seeking to appoint up to four continuing Lecturers and/or Senior Lecturers at Academic Level B and/or Level C, broadly equivalent to Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the United States.
We welcome applications from outstanding mathematicians in any area of mathematics. Applicants should have an excellent research record, relative to opportunity and career stage, and a strong commitment to high-quality teaching.
Successful applicants will be expected to develop an internationally visible research program, contribute to the MSI’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervise research students, and participate in the life of the Institute. In making appointments, MSI will consider both the quality of the candidate and the strength of the research environment available to support their work.
The positions include a two-year start-up grant to support research, visitors and conference travel, as well as a reduced teaching load for the first two years.
About the Mathematical Sciences Institute
The Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI) is one of Australia’s leading schools for research and education in mathematics.
MSI is home to a broad and active research community, with strengths across pure, applied and computational mathematics. Current research areas include algebraic geometry, representation theory, number theory, algebraic and geometric topology, nonlinear partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, geometric analysis, mathematical data science, computational mathematics, mathematical physics, probability and stochastics.
The MSI has approximately 51 academics and is located in a modern, award-winning building with excellent research and teaching facilities. MSI offers one of the most comprehensive undergraduate mathematics programs in Australia, as well as Honours, MSc, MPhil and PhD programs. ANU also offers research-focused undergraduate pathways, including the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences and the elite Bachelor of Philosophy that attracts a significant number of the very best undergraduate students to ANU.
MSI supports a large and talented student cohort, with more than 1700 undergraduate coursework students and around 75 students across Honours, MSc, MPhil and PhD programs. MSI also supports students through scholarships, prizes and research opportunities.
