The School of Culture, History and Language is the focus of research and teaching in Asian and Pacific humanities, social sciences and languages and seeks to build excellence in understanding and capability in engaging with the Asia and Pacific region. The key disciplines that are represented in the School are anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, and languages, all contributing to the foundational knowledge of Asia and the Pacific.]

The linguistics program in the School of Culture, History and Languages (CHL), ANU College of the Asia-Pacific (CAP), has a proud history of research on the languages of Melanesia and in particular is the leading centre worldwide for the study of Papuan languages. Linguists in CHL/CAP work closely with their disciplinary colleagues in CASS (College of Arts and Social Sciences) to offer a joint program in linguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, but are also regionally embedded in the areal interests of colleagues in CHL in the Pacific and Asia, with many ongoing collaborations in such fields as archaeology, anthropology and history. Linguistics at ANU has a strong commitment to documenting the world’s fragile linguistic wealth, using approaches that are empirically grounded, typologically embedded, and that give due emphasis to linguistic diversity, variability and change. The Opportunity

We are seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer within CHL Linguistics to engage with stakeholders in Melanesia, produce high quality linguistic research, strengthen our core teaching and supervise higher degree research students. The Lecturer or Senior Lecturer will report to Associate Professor Danielle Barth and work closely linguistics staff and students in both the College of Asia and the Pacific and the College of Arts and Social Sciences, as well as other colleagues in CAP.

In this role you will be responsible for teaching in your expertise areas, especially in Linguistic Field Methods and Papuan Languages, supervise PhD, Masters and Honours Students, attract category 1, 2, and 3 funding, and continue ANU’s research excellence.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a Phd in Linguistics or a related field with experience in linguistic documentation and description in Melanesia. You will have demonstrated experience in research, teaching and supervision.  To excel in this role, you will also have expertise in related work that will strengthen the modern offerings and research in our linguistics program, supporting crucial new developments in the field, particularly computationally-based approaches to language data.
