This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine (CHM) encompasses a tradition of research excellence that has fostered four Nobel Laureates and trains leaders in science, medicine, health and the environment in Research Schools consistently ranked among the top performers in the world in their various fields. The College is committed to solving problems through fundamental and applied scientific research and improving health outcomes for people in Australia and around the world.  The College houses three Research Schools - the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR); the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) and the School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP).

School overview

The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) works to advance human health and wellbeing, enhancing the lives of individuals and strengthening communities, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples, in the ACT, NSW and beyond. By integrating the disciplines of medicine and psychology we aim to unlock the secrets of health and wellbeing, develop impactful therapies, solve national and international health problems, and lead impactful social change. To do this we conduct collaborative, courageous, transformational and translational research, integrating perspectives, knowledge and techniques from multiple disciplines. We develop excellent, adaptable, resilient and innovative clinicians, academics and health care leaders of the future who work in partnership with their patients and colleagues to provide optimal care for individuals while strengthening the stem and society they work in. We partner with discovery-focused and population researchers, healthcare providers, government, commercial and not for profit organisations and communities.

The ANU rural medicine program, delivered through the Rural Clinical School (RCS), provides access to medical education for students from rural locations, and offers rural learning experiences for all students in the MChD program. The RCS is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health as part of the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program (RHMTP). The RCS enables medical students to undertake part of their training through rural placements in six rural campuses throughout SE NSW, in Bega, Cooma, Eurobodalla, Goulburn, Young and Cowra. By providing positive rural experiences, the RCS aims to encourage medical graduates to pursue careers in rural clinical practice. The RCS also undertakes rurally focused research and engages with local communities to support health professionals who are working in these communities.
