Position overview

The successful candidate will join the project ‘Why Monarchy Endures. Answers from the Ancient Mediterranean World’, led by Associate Professor Caillan Davenport and funded by an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (FT2401000701). The project is particularly seeking a scholar with expertise in the politics and government of the eastern Mediterranean world (c. 1200 BCE-600 CE) in regions such as Greece, Anatolia, Egypt, and/or Persia.

They appointee will spend 50% of their time engaged in research for the project as well as its wider intellectual and knowledge translation activities. This includes associate supervision of PhD and Honours students. The successful candidate will receive funding to present their research at national and international conferences and be supported to apply for Australian Research Council grants, such as a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award or a Future Fellowship.

The other 50% of the appointee’s time will be devoted to education and service in the Centre for Classical Studies. They will possess the necessary skills, flexibility, and collegiality to teach broadly across all three majors: Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies (history, culture, and literature in English translation). In Classical Studies, they will teach CLAS2014: Democrats, Tyrants, and Emperors: The Art of Government in the Ancient Mediterranean in collaboration with A/Prof. Davenport, and contribute to other courses, such as CLAS1006: Ancient Greece: History, Culture, and Society, and CLAS3003: Faith and Belief in Ancient Greece and Rome.

The Centre for Classical Studies, housed in the School of Literature, Languages, and Linguistics, is a major international centre for the study of Ancient Greece and Rome. It is also home to the ANU Classics Museum, a collection of more than 600 artefacts from the ancient Mediterranean world, with a special focus on objects illustrating daily life. Current staff research interests include: Greek religion, science and technology; Latin literature and slavery; the literature and culture of imperial Greece; material culture and Museum Studies; gender and the environment; the world of Late Antiquity and Byzantium; the reception and legacy of the Greek and Roman worlds; and ancient politics and government.
