Position overview

The Associate Director, Security plays a pivotal leadership role within the Operations Portfolio, overseeing the strategic direction and delivery of protective security services across the Australian National University. This includes governance, personnel, information, and physical security, with a strong emphasis on risk management, policy development, and contract oversight.

You will lead a large, contracted workforce, manage critical relationships with external agencies including the AFP and ACT Emergency Services, and ensure The Australian National University’s security practices align with national standards such as the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF). This role is central to fostering a culture of security awareness and operational excellence across the University.

We are seeking a strategic and experienced security professional with demonstrated leadership in complex environments. You will bring:

  • Proven expertise in physical, electronic and personnel security management
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and crisis response capabilities
  • Experience leading contracted service teams and managing budgets
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to excellence and integrity
  • Familiarity with PSPF and other relevant legislative frameworks

The Division

The mission of the Campus Environment Division is to enable academic excellence at The Australian National University through integrated and innovative facilities and project delivery. The Division comprises five key portfolios: Operations, Infrastructure and Planning, Corporate, Environmental Sustainability, and University House.

The Department

The Operations Portfolio is responsible for managing and coordinating the delivery of operational services within the Division. This includes Sustainability programs and projects, as well as the management of Cleaning, Waste, Recycling, Gardens and Grounds, Security, and Remote Sites.

Campus Environment maintains and enhances the University’s physical environment, creating and maintaining sustainable state-of-the-art facilities, landscape and infrastructure across multiple locations. The Division’s remit includes major construction projects, engineering services, commercial leasing, venues and accommodation, safety and compliance, and environmental sustainability.
