The Position

Laureate Postdoctoral Fellow within Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES).

Join Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić’s Global & Planetary Seismology Group to advance deep Earth and planetary core science using next-generation seismic imaging and new data. With guaranteed 5-year funding, you will employ seismic wavefield and correlation methods to map Earth’s core, explore its interactions with upper layers, and extend insights to the Moon, Mars, and icy moons—directly supporting scientific institutions, space agencies and industry. Based at the Australian National University in one of the world’s top Earth Sciences schools (#12; QS 2024; QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024), you will lead high-impact publications, mentor PhD students, and build an independent research profile in a collaborative, inclusive environment, fully resourced with global datasets, supercomputing, and field campaigns. Open to all nationalities; visa & relocation supported.

The Laureate Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to undertake work in all three areas of academic activity –research, education, and service (including outreach). They will contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the University.

The Person

You will hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in seismology, geophysics, computer/data science, or planetary science. You will have demonstrated expertise in global seismology, particularly relating to the Earth’s core, core–mantle boundary, or mantle structure. Proficiency in waveform processing, programming (e.g. Python, ObsPy, SPECFEM), and forward or inverse modelling is essential, along with a record of high-quality publications and conference presentations.

You will be able to work both independently and as part of a diverse research team. Experience with machine learning, array seismology, or planetary mission data analysis (such as InSight or Apollo) is desirable, as is evidence of mentoring, outreach, or interdisciplinary collaboration across fields such as geodynamics, geomagnetism, mineral physics, or planetary science.

You will thrive in a supportive, respectful environment and contribute to RSES’s intellectual life through seminars, peer review, and inclusive practices. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for building productive relationships with students, staff, and global partners.
