The Area

The ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) operates Australia’s largest optical observatory and has access to the world’s largest optical telescopes.

Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) is one of two key sites for the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) in Australia. The site sits at the summit of Mt Woorut, NSW, and is set within the stunning National Heritage Listed Warrumbungle National Park, around 30 kilometres from the town of Coonabarabran. The Observatory is the largest optical observatory in Australia and is an important site for astronomy, astrophysics and space science in Australia. Along with several active telescopes owned by the Australian National University, the site is home to the Anglo Australian Telescope (AAT), and many international facilities.

Our staff and students have made major contributions to astronomy, mapping the structure and formation of the Milky Way, discovering planets orbiting other stars, measuring dark matter both within our Galaxy and in the wider Universe, and discovering the accelerating expansion of the Universe.

The Position

Based within Siding Spring Observatory (SSO), the Technical Assistant (Electronics) provides specialist support for electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and scientific instruments in support of telescope operations at the Observatory.  The technical assistant is expected, and will be supported, to gain formal qualifications while obtaining practical skills via hands on learning at SSO.

The main responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide general, technical and administrative assistances to the teams across SSO.
  • Assist with various electronic technician tasks including component level board repairs, fault-finding activities and maintenance of cryogenic systems.
  • Assist in the routine maintenance of instruments, including 2df fibre repairs.

Training will be provided to the successful applicant on all tasks. 

The Person

To excel in this role you will have:

  • Completion of Year 12 or a Certificate I or II with relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance and operate equipment.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely.
