A Research Fellow on planning under uncertainty for an ARC Linkage project with Safran. Join us in developing fundamental mission and motion planning approaches that could contribute to making helicopter services safer and faster. Specific opportunities include:

  • Opportunities to design and develop novel fundamental approaches for mission and motion planning under uncertainty, with an application to Helicopter Pilot Assistance Systems.
  • Opportunities to collaborate closely with researchers at the ANU, Safran Australia, and Safran France.

The School of Computing has a strong foundation in computing and information sciences at ANU. We are a transformative centre for research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer systems and software, and theoretical foundations of computing. We span traditional and modern thinking, connecting decades of computer science methodologies with modern data and computational science. Position overview 

This position is a fixed term for a period of 2 years appointment to contribute to the development of the planning components of an AI-based helicopter pilot assistance systems.

The project is a collaboration between the ANU School of Computing and Safran Electronics and Defence Australia (SEDA) in building the next generation AI-based pilot assistance systems for helicopter Emergency Medical Services and Search And Rescue Services. The school is a community of high performing academic and professional staff, students and visitors sharing a deep commitment to transforming the future of computing for the next generation, with leading research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer systems and software, and theoretical foundations of computing. Safran is a multinational company, specialising in aircraft and rocket engine, aerospace components, and their defence applications.

The Research Fellow will be based at the ANU’s School of Computing and collaborate closely with the ANU and Safran researchers involved in this project, as well with the broader ANU community. The Research Fellow will also have opportunities for research visits to Safran’s research labs in Australia and France. 

The successful candidate will have completed, or nearly completed a PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Aerospace Engineering or allied discipline relevant to the project, with a track record on research in at least one of the following fields: Motion planning under uncertainty, mission planning under uncertainty, integrated task and motion planning, and Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes, as evidenced by high quality publications in peer-reviewed conferences and/or journals. Experience in applying research results from one of the mentioned areas to a physical robot is a plus.

Longer term and/or ongoing appointment may be offered in exceptional cases subject to performance and budget availability as well the candidate’s demonstrated capability and desire to complement the College’s strategic agendas in teaching, research and broader engagement within the University and community.
