ANU has recently commenced a national initiative funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Agency (NRRA) - Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. A key objective is to partner with several regional communities to develop Australian guidelines for integration of natural asset-based approaches to flood resilience. Australia is very exposed to damage caused by extreme rainfall. Despite previous flood studies and certain preventative measures taken, floods have continued to cause significant loss and damage across NSW and Queensland. The challenges of flood risk management are being compounded by climate change, exposing vulnerabilities in flood risk management strategies that have been implemented over the past century. With an increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events due to climate change, we need to learn from these experiences and prepare better for floods.
Effective flood risk management is critical to limit future losses. To address flood risks and impacts, existing flood management strategies must be augmented by new nature-based options that consider and create systemic co-benefits and consider the likely future climatic conditions associated with climate change.
This position will be part of an interdisciplinary team and will assess effectiveness of different solutions to flood mitigation through modelling at the catchment scale and testing the impacts of interventions.
This Research Fellow position is a joint appointment between the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) and the ANU Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI). The Research Fellow will work within an interdisciplinary team across ANU as well as a number of regional communities and a multi-stakeholder Advisory Group.
The role will undertake independent research to contribute to the NRRA funded initiative - Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. This includes collection and processing of data, testing the performance of the ANUGA model for historical floods, designing improvements to the model to overcome observed deficiencies, using the model to simulate future flood scenarios and evaluate the impact of proposed flood mitigation strategies; and working with an interdisciplinary team at ANU to develop integrated options.
The role has a strong focus on research. The Research Fellow will also make some contributions to education and service (especially outreach and engagement regarding the research).
To excel in this role, you will have a PhD in applied mathematics, hydrology, engineering, environmental science or a related area, with a track record of independent research. You will demonstrate experience in articulating and prosecuting innovative research and a vision for the activities you would undertake at ANU.
