Position overview

IODP (the International Ocean Discovery Program) is the world's largest and longest lasting purely scientific geoscience program, providing drilling vessels capable of coring and inserting downhole observatories far below the seabed in most water depths and water conditions. Giant core repositories are housed in the USA, Europe and Japan. Australia and New Zealand form ANZIC (Australia and New Zealand IODP Consortium) within IODP, entitling them to involvement in all IODP activities.  The Science Plan for 2013-2023 sets out the four major scientific themes, within which expeditions are approved to address global problems. The key program website is IODP.org and the ANZIC website is IODP.org.au.

The position is part-time (0.7-0.8 FTE) for four years based on current funding availability, and is responsible for coordinating all activities of the Australian and New Zealand IODP Consortium secretariat at ANU. In addition to the part-time role, there may be opportunity to undertake teaching activities within RSES, depending on the skills of the successful candidate. 

The Program Scientist looks after scientific aspects of ANZIC's involvement in IODP. Thus he/she is involved in high-level scientific planning both in Australia and New Zealand and internationally; in the meetings of the ANZIC Governing Council and Science Committee; in scientific workshop planning; in encouraging and helping ANZIC scientists get involved in expeditions and international panels; in encouraging and helping our people develop drilling proposals in conjunction with our international partners; and in publicising IODP in the ANZIC context including at scientific conferences and during port calls; producing a glossy Annual Report for wide consumption. Previous experience in scientific ocean drilling activities would be a distinct advantage but is not a pre-requisite. It is expected that the position would be filled by a geologist.

The successful candidate will be directly responsible to the Director of RSES on financial matters, and directly responsible to the Chair of ANZIC Governing Council on program and scientific matters. This is a position of great responsibility and with a great deal of freedom of action, requiring considerable initiative, and interpersonal skills. Considerable short-term travel in Australia and New Zealand, and occasionally overseas is required.

This position is located within the ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. The College covers all areas of scientific endeavour, from astrophysics to climate change, epidemiology to theoretical chemistry, scientists at ANU use their skills to contribute to advancing science for the future of the world, integrating high level research and educational excellence.
