The School of Clinical Medicine is seeking a dynamic individual with proven high level management skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and with a clinical background, to play a key role in managing the school’s clinical skills teaching program for medical students and to manage its Clinical Skills Centre.

Position OverviewClinical skills are a key component of the 4-year MBBS curriculum and are taught at the School of Clinical Medicine based at The Canberra Hospital. The syllabus includes communication skills, physical examination techniques and procedural skills. A well-equipped Clinical Skills Centre supports this program and is a shared facility with ACT Health. A diverse range of people are involved in the clinical skills program, including tutors employed by either the ANU or ACT Health, volunteer patients, and employed simulated patients.

As Clinical Skills Manager, you must have proven high level administration and organisational experience, demonstrable program and staff management skills, the ability to develop and implement policies and procedures, and a current working knowledge of clinical skills practices. You will contribute towards the development of the skills teaching program, participate in its delivery and manage the Centre. You will be committed and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Role statementPURPOSE STATEMENT:
This position is responsible for the overall management of the clinical skills teaching component for medical students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS).

POSITION DIMENSION & RELATIONSHIPS:
This position works under the broad direction of the Executive Officer at the SCM and is located at The Canberra Hospital campus of the ANU Medical School. The position works closely with academic staff that are responsible for the curriculum and teaching delivery of clinical skills. The occupant is part of a larger administrative team within the SCM with primary responsibility for the clinical skills teaching across all 4 years of the program including the supervision of staff that support the day-to-day operational aspects of the program. The position interacts with a wide spectrum of students and professional personnel on a daily basis in addition to academic and executive personnel within the SCM and ANUMS on the Acton Campus.

ROLE STATEMENT:
1. Coordinate and participate in the delivery of the clinical skills teaching program for medical students.
2. Manage the clinical skills administrative support team by providing effective leadership, direction and supervision for staff.
3. Participate in the evaluation and revision of the clinical skills teaching program to meet the educational needs of medical students, maximise learning opportunities and ensure clinical best practice is followed.
4. Ensure appropriate human and physical resources are available to support clinical skills teaching and monitor expenditure on these resources.
5. Manage the Clinical Skills Centre.
6. Participate in the planning, writing and conduct of assessment and exams.
7. Provide advice within the Medical School on matters of a clinical nature in relation to the teaching program.
8. Promote the Clinical Skills Centre and the School of Clinical Medicine as a centre of excellence.
9. Other duties as required and consistent with the classification of the position.
Selection criteria 
A. QUALIFICATIONS
1. Registered health professional or qualification in a medical field and relevant experience.
2. Current knowledge, understanding and experience in clinical procedures.

B. EXPERIENCE
1. Experience in and/or sound knowledge of the management of clinical skills teaching.
2. Proven ability to liaise effectively with senior academic staff, administrative staff, medical staff and medical students.
3. Demonstrated high-level organisational skills, combined with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
4. Highly developed computer skills and experience in using a variety of software applications in a PC environment, including Microsoft Office applications and Outlook.
5. Experience in the development of practical teaching programs.
6. Knowledge of postgraduate studies and adult learning principles.

2. Proven ability to manage staff, to work effectively as part of a wider team, as well as independently with people from diverse backgrounds.
