Australia South Asia Research Centre, within the Arndt–Corden Division of Economics, is seeking to make a new appointment at the Postdoctoral Research Fellow level. The successful candidate will be expected to work on an International Development Research Centre (IDRC), National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) funded project “Rural Governance and Inclusive Growth”.

Position OverviewThe position will be for an economist who specializes in applied economics and econometrics. The successful applicant should have a PhD in Economics. Field of specialization is open although there is a preference for candidates with specialization in applied micro-economics, cross-section and panel data analysis. The demonstrated ability to process and conduct econometric modelling of large household level data sets and experience with STATA or similar econometric package would be highly desirable. It is desirable, but not essential, that the applicant’s current work relates to South Asia but the applicant should demonstrate a strong interest in to work on South Asian economic issues, particularly the design of anti-poverty programs in India.

The successful candidate would be expected to assist Division PhD students as well as academic staff members in the area of econometrics. This will be a full-time fixed term 2 year appointment. The level of the appointment will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. Candidates are asked to indicate whether they would be interested in the option of a fractional (half-time) appointment.

Role statementPURPOSE STATEMENT:
The Australia South Asia Research Centre (ASARC) has been awarded a grant by IDRC/NCAER to work on a project Rural Governance and Inclusive Growth. The research on this project will involve econometric analysis of large scale household and village level data for rural India. A copy of the research proposal accepted by the funding agencies can be made available upon request.
This grant provides an important opportunity for ASARC to conduct research at the frontier level and this research is likely to have very significant policy implications. Hence, this is a unique opportunity for ASARC to build critical capacity in this extremely important research area.

ASARC will be contributing 50% of the cost of a Postdoctoral Fellow (A/B level) for 2 years. The Arndt–Corden Division of Economics has agreed to provide the remaining 50%. This recruitment proposal, if funded, will go a long way in building CAP’s expertise on the Indian Economy, an area of strategic priority for the College.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:

Position Dimension & Relationships:
ASARC specialises on conducting research on the South Asian/Indian economy. The Arndt–Corden Division of Economics (ACDE) specialises in the analysis of economic development and policy in the Asia–Pacific region. Hence the proposed position would fit the work of the ACDE and ASARC perfectly and, indeed, would substantially enhance their India profile. The College of Asia and the Pacific in its recent review has emphasised the study of India as a strategic priority. Therefore, the person appointed to this position would be contributing significantly to the College’s emphasis on India.

Role Statement:

Postdoctoral Fellow (Level A)
A. Qualifications
1. PhD in Economics or equivalent.

B. Experience
1. Proven record of research in applied microeconomics and quantitative skills as demonstrated particularly through publications and referees’ assessments.
2. An interest in the Asia Pacific economies and a willingness to work on issues related to the South Asia region.
3. Submission of a proposed program of research on issues related to applied microeconomics.
2. Willingness to supervise postgraduate students from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
4. Willingness to perform administrative work on behalf of the Centre.

C. Attributes
1. Capacity and willingness to establish and maintain effective relations with colleagues and staff within the School, the University and externally, both nationally and internationally.
2. Ability and willingness to assist PhD students and staff members with regard to cross-sectional and panel data analysis.
